Breast Pump & Accessories

A baby needs to eat… a lot! For those first few weeks to months, most moms will just need their own breasts.

Eventually, however, the majority of moms will need to use a breast pump to start storing up that liquid gold for when they return to work or for those inevitable moments when they’re away for more than a few hours.

Choosing not to breastfeed? Or having an incredibly difficult time getting more than a few drops of breast milk at a time?

Yep, that was me, too.

In that case, you’re going to need formula and some bottles.

I know very few moms who exclusively breast feed. While by no means impossible, it is rather doubtful that mom will be there 100% of the time during baby’s first year to nurse.

Whether your formula feeding or pumping and then feeding expressed breast milk, chances are very high that you’re going to need some bottles.

Personally, I used Dr. Brown’s bottles. They were easy to clean and greatly reduced the amount of air bubbles my child was swallowing.

Video Monitor

Number one on the list of safety must-haves is a video baby monitor. You’ll want to check in periodically to see what your newborn is up to at night and during nap time.

No other baby gadget will give you peace of mind like a highly rated baby monitor.

Car Seat

Chances are you are going to leave your home with your baby at some point in time. Make sure you have a lightweight, sturdy car seat and car seat base to safely transport them from point A to point B.

Lightweight Stroller Frame

There are so many different strollers out there. Jogging strollers, umbrella strollers, double strollers, strollers with toddler platforms, etc. Each kind serves a different purpose and may be needed at some point in time.

In the beginning, however, before you really decide what you need or want, all parents should invest in an inexpensive, lightweight stroller frame that the car seat clips directly into.

They are easy to fold, easy to stash in the trunk of a car and very easy to pick up out of the car. They make running errands with a baby in tow quick and painless.

An infant thermometer is an absolute must. New and seasoned parents alike are all going to have those late-night moments where they think baby may be running a fever.

In those instances, an easy to use, noninvasive thermometer is such a lifesaver. It can offer peace of mind or the wisdom to know when it’s time to take baby in to be examined.

Listen, parents… I know we all want our precious babies to be decked out in the cutest and most fashionable clothing ever but it’s just not necessary.

Stuffy clothes with lots of buttons and tiny neck lines are also rather inconvenient for parents performing frequent wardrobe changes due to diaper blowouts or colossal spit-ups. They can also be pretty uncomfortable for the baby.

Soft, comfortable, and breathable onsies that allow baby to move easily are the best and most affordable option. If the weather is cooler, just add some soft pants or jacket over top.

Swaddles and Sleep Sacks

Newborns love to be snug and cozy, a sensation that mimics the womb environment. Wrapping baby up in a swaddle or sleep sack helps them feel safe and secure. In turn, they are more calm and relaxed which helps them sleep more soundly and for longer periods of time.

Swaddles also help minimize the startle reflex as well as those sporadic and erratic limb movements that often wake a baby up.

Personally, I swaddled first until about 4 or 5 months and then switched to a sleep sack or zippered pajamas.

Diapers and Wipes

I mean, duh, right?

All babies need diapers and wipes to keep them clean and dry. It’s a no-brainer. Personally, I used Pampers Swaddlers for sizes 1 and 2 and then the oh-so-affordable and absorbent Luvs for sizes 3 to 5.

Wipes are also essential and something I recommend having on hand at all times. Even when your kids are older, grown and out of the house.

A miracle product that can be used in so many situations, wipes can clean so much more than a baby’s tiny booty. Faces, car consoles, sticky hands, table tops at restaurants, your dresser, and the list goes on and on.

P.S. Kirkland Signature Baby Wipes are the BEST!
