If you’ve read my list of Top 10 Newborn Baby Essentials, then you know what’s most important to keep baby fed, clean and safe. But what about those items that, while perhaps not 100% necessary, will make life 100% easier while trying to care for an infant?
You’ll find those products here.
Below, I share 10 baby must-haves that have worked for me and some of my most-trusted mom friends.
Most Practical Baby Products
Sound machines are a life saver. From the first day home from the hospital, I used them on all three of my kids with great success.
Why are they so awesome?
The white noise of a sound machine drowns out other sudden and disturbing noises coming from both inside the house (rowdy siblings, barking dogs, clanging pots and pans) and outside the house (honking cars, garbage trucks, lawnmowers, construction workers).

It also provides a steady stream of gentle sound that helps babies fall asleep and slay asleep by neutralizing all those other small, potentially disturbing noises. For example, a mom creeping into the nursery to get the phone she forgot, an air conditioning unit buzzing to life or a thunderstorm in the distance.
You can even take the white noise on-the-go with a portable sound machine that can clip to a car seat or stroller.
Trust me, for the first year of their life at least, only purchase baby pajamas that zip up. You do not want to fumble around with a zillion tiny snaps or buttons at 2 am.
Seriously, ain’t no body got time for that when you’re tired and just want to go back to bed.
Zippered pajamas allow for quick and gentle, middle of the night diaper changes or wardrobe changes if needed.
Whether you’re utilizing a breast pump or bottle feeding, your going to need a bottle brush to scrub and sanitize all those parts. A regular ol’ sponge just isn’t going to cut it when it comes to cleaning out all those tiny nooks and crannies.
While we’re at it, a bottle drying station is also a must unless you want all those plastic and silicone parts piled up on or rolling off of your kitchen counter top.
This little gadget is a must. From day one, baby can recline in the bouncer seat while you cook, clean, shower, pump, go to the bathroom or read a magazine. It keeps them slightly elevated off the floor, too, which keeps them safe from trampling dogs and siblings.
They can play in it, nap in it, and watch you wander around the house in it.
Also, it is very lightweight so if you need to transport baby from one room to the next you can very easily pick in up and relocate it. Make sure baby is strapped in tight, of course.
My bouncer seat also doubled as a highchair for those first few months of feeding purees when they didn’t possess enough core stability to sit up well on their own.
Backpack Diaper Bag
Before having children, I never realized just how many things I would be required to hold and carry around throughout the day.
I felt like my arms were always weighed down with car seats, strollers, diaper bags, groceries, toddlers, sippy cups, lovies, and let’s not forget the actual baby.
By using a backpack diaper bag, you’re taking one more thing out of your hands, making your load lighter and freeing up your arms to tote around all those other important items that motherhood requires.
This is another contraption that I didn’t know about (or possibly didn’t exist) when my babies were babies. But apparently, according to all my mom friends with newborns, the DockATot is the miracle that all exhausted parents have been waiting for.
Whether you’re co-sleeping or throwing your baby in their own crib on night one, the DockATot creates a snugly, nest-like atmosphere that mimics the womb and helps them feel safe and secure.
Place it in their crib, in a bedside bassinet or directly in the bed next to you to create a comfortable and safe place for baby to sleep.
DockATot also facilitates tummy time. You can prop them up on the soft, supportive sides, giving the back of their head a break while building neck, back and core strength, too.
The baby carrier, another life-altering baby product that allows you to be hands free. Those hands don’t have room for one more thing. They’re busy pushing that grocery cart, washing those dishes, picking up that toddler, vacuuming that floor, responding to those emails and all the other things that parents do.
The questions is which baby carrier is the best, most comfortable and easiest to use?
Ask 100 different parents and you’ll probably get 100 different answers.
Personally, I like the ones that weren’t too bulky and offered a hefty amount of lower back support. I never had much luck with the wrap-around cloth kind. But that’s just me.
Have you ever tried using one of those suction bulbs to clear your baby’s nose? You know the ones. They issue them to all new parents at the hospital?
Yeah. They’re pretty much awful and I’ve never met a baby who enjoyed the experience.
So how can you effectively clean out those tiny nostrils without jabbing your precious child in the brain?
Meet the NoseFrida, a small straw-like tube that allows you to suck out snot.
Did you just throw up a little in your mouth at the thought of that?
Yep, I did too when I was first told about the Nose Frieda. But, after many failed attempts at relieving a stuffed up newborn nose, I caved and bought one for myself.
You guys, they’re awesome and work so well! And, cross my heart and swear to goodness, you will NOT get boogers in your own mouth. There is this filter thingy inside NoseFrida that keeps that from happening.
Seriously, it’s amazing! Use it in combination with Boogie Wipes and you will have a clear nose in no time!

I live in Florida where it is HOT pretty much all year round. Thus, a portable, clip-on stroller and car seat fan was a must.
We hooked our stroller fan onto the stroller, the infant car seat, and the bouncer seat to keep baby from sweltering.
A portable fan keeps baby cool, circulates fresh air, and acts as a sound machine while on the go. The soft hum of the fan can lull a little one to sleep and keep them comfortable.
Haakaa Breast Pump
Full disclosure, I had no idea the Haakaa Silicone Breastpump existed when I was attempting to nurse my babies. But, according to all my breast-feeding champion mom friends, this little contraption is pretty much the best thing ever.
Apparently, while nursing your babe on one side, you attach the Haakaa Pump to the other. This allows you to express milk or capture leaking milk that you can store and save for later.
It uses suction to gently and silently pull milk from your breast and/or facilitate let down. There are no cords, no batteries, and it’s only one piece. That means cleaning it is easy and fast.
This affordable little milk saver is making big waves in the breastfeeding community. Check it out and start stock piling that liquid gold!
I’d love to know if you’ve tried any of these products and what you think. And comment below with what products have made your life easier during those baby days!
